Brown female with white ruff
‘Brown Female with White Ruff,’ earned Highly Commended in Art Edit magazine’s 2024 Self Represented Artist of the Year Award.
With this painting, I wanted to capture tranquility and harmony in defiance of the frenetic pace of modern life. Much like the stillness observed in a gazelle peacefully grazing after escaping a lion’s chase, I hope we still possess the ability to down-regulate and experience serenity in the face of stress and endless to-do lists.
Brown Female with White Ruff is part of my Human/Nature series, exploring the connection between humanity and the natural world. The human-like primates in this series could be both ancestors and descendants, prompting reflection on what it means to be part of a species. These primal beings, deeply connected to nature, are an antidote to what, to me, feels like the overwhelmingness of life.
This piece is painted in oils, which I use exclusively for their smoothness, flexibility and wonderful blending ability.
